Toyota 4 Runner Rollover Accidents
While Sport Utility Vehicle manufacturers continue to spend millions of dollars marketing the vehicles as rugged and safe, one of the fastest growing dangers on the road today is the rapidly rising incidents of SUV rollovers. These incidents have proven to be a grave hazard - every year more than 10,000 people - one-third of all occupant fatalities - die in rollover crashes. Due to a lower center of gravity, rollovers in SUVs are especially perilous.
Toyota 4Runners are proven perpetrators - models built before 1996 have been called death traps with a severe and dangerous propensity to roll over. The 4Runner's dangerous defects have been repeatedly established both at trial and on appeal. Even Toyota has admitted that pre-1996 models of the 4Runner roll over on flat, dry pavement due to tire friction forces alone, and Toyota tests show that the 4Runner will roll over at speeds of less than 40 miles per hour when a driver takes evasive action.
Sadly, more than 30 of the 2002 SUVs tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS) earned just one or two stars, including the Toyota 4Runner. The multiple safety hazards can lead to occupants being crushed in the vehicle or ejected from it even when wearing a seat belt.
